Thats the cover for the 1986 summer issue of HEAVY METAL. Its a drawing/painting of two of the main characters of one of the showcase comic/stories in the magazine.
Normally I don't critque comics or short stories, but considering Heavy Metal is the epitome of geekdom and badass, and that cover *ahem* caught my eye, and the fact the story is amazing; I thought I'd give it a big post here.
The author wrote a great story with lots of twists and cool concepts, and he's my kinda guy with lots of gore, creatures, decapitations, and he obviously has a thing for making excuses to show some boobies and such. But, in the end, who's complaining?
But without good eye catching artwork, and one hell of a good story, it could've easily decended into an overrated porn comic. Thank god it wasn't, maybe he has an unhealthy 'appreciation' for the female form, but the rest of the story and art are very impressive in both tone and scope. Everything feels like a large scale, grand, epic, sci-fi adventure. It feels like Dark City, Dead Space, and Blade Runner all in one. Except with a sexy woman in the lead role and spotlight.
Don't get me wrong, there are a few spots in here that are undeniably perverted and would be best kept to fetish magazines, but with an indie mag like Heavy Metal, its kind of a given. So I suggest, if you're not too sensitive to disturbing things, and to be blunt, often disturbing sexual things, give it a try. (If you can find the specific issue, haha.)
Action packed, visually stunning, and rather refreshing in tone, pace, and visual style, Morbus Gravis is worth your time.
