No ghosts, exorcists, aliens, dead people, zombies and no insurance scheming bad guys...
The only reason these three people are terrorizing this couple, is because "they were home..."
The Strangers is such a brutal straightforward horror movie that sometimes it loses touch with being entertainment and really just becomes sick. Theres no complicated plot, no big scary special effects, no gore showcase, no police subplot, nothing like that at all...
just terror. And the director is somehow able to convey this horror straight into you.
It's an exhausting movie, with such a tiny payoff, that we see how dedicated the movie is to maintaining this hardlined realism tone even if it might alienate the viewer.
The Strangers is an excercise on how to make a horror movie scary.
It didn't need gore, or traps, or some divine reason why this couple should die...
The movie has about as much depth and purpose as the killers have a reason for killing..
there isn't one.
Save your time and watch a Freddy movie, or even a Saw film, but this movie...
is too well made and very evil. not a pleasant experience.
